Tata Motors currently has no product in the mid-sized compact SUV category, which is currently dominated by Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Maruti Grand Vitara. However, things will soon change as Tata Motors is ready with its new product strategy for the mid-sized SUV. Not just 1, Tata Motors is preparing two new SUVs to challenge the dominance of Creta and Grand Vitara.
It is no secret that Tata Motors will introduce the production version of the Curvv SUV Coupe in the first half of 2024. The new Curvv will first come as an EV and the ICE powertrain will join soon after. This model will have unique styling and will target young buyers looking for a sportier SUV. It will be the first coupe SUV in the 4.3 metre SUV category.
The petrol-powered version is likely to be priced somewhere between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh. The electric version will cost above 20 lakh. For people not in the know, Hyundai will also introduce the electric version of the Creta SUV in 2025. Moreover, the significantly revised version of the Creta will be introduced sometime in early 2024. On the flip side, Maruti Suzuki will introduce a new mid-sized electric SUV, measuring 4.3 meters in length, in the late 2024.
The second SUV from Tata Motors in the 4.3 meters category will be the production version of the Tata Sierra. Similar to the Curvv, the Sierra will be offered with both electric and ICE powertrain options. Unlike Curvv, the Sierra will have conventional SUV styling and will target traditional SUV buyer. The Sierra will have squarish & practical styling and will offer ease of driving. It is reported that Tata could also introduce the AWD version of the Sierra in the market.
While both SUVs will have completely different designs, the new models will share several components under the skin. Both SUVs are likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that debuted at the 2023 Auto Expo. This 4-cylinder direct injection turbo petrol engine is capable of producing 170bhp of power at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 280Nm between 2000rpm and 3500rpm. The Curvv could also get the new 1.2L turbo petrol engine that offers 125PS and 225Nm of torque.
